Yesterday, we received a note from Astro Gaming (whom we’ve recently spoken with about next-gen audio) indicating that their headsets will work for chat on the PlayStation 4… just not right away. This prompted us to dig a little deeper and find out what gaming headset owners can expect on November 15.

The answer we received from Sony is complicated. If you have a Sony-branded PULSE gaming headset (or the elite edition of that product), you will need to wait for a system update coming in the future. It seems that those will not work at all at launch.

Any other headset that relies on bluetooth for chat will not work at all. If you have something that relies on USB for chat (like the Astro mixamps and Astro A50 wireless system), you’ll eventually be able to use those. An update will be coming in the future.

Any headset that relies on digital optical for game audio will continue to provide that out of the box. You just won’t be able to chat yet.

I’ve been receiving a lot of questions over the past few weeks on twitter and youtube with gamers asking me will they be able to use their external capture devices with the PS4. This commentary seeks to answer those questions.

Video capture on the PlayStation 3 is only possible by using the AV port or stripping HDCP from the HDMI signal (a process that isn’t legal). The PlayStation 4 doesn’t have an AV port, though. The Share button is currently only confirmed for Twitch and uStream, and it’s unclear how fully featured that is. Subscriptions, donations, branding, and other Twitch features haven’t been discussed yet, for instance.

PS4 Gameplay Capture Through External Devices Unclear

I think they didn’t expect Microsoft to enable the feature on the X1. They really wanted to push the share feature. They scored a point with having a longer recording buffer than X1, but didn’t anticipate the HDCP backlash would grow.

Amid the growing popularity of the Oculus Rift VR headset among the development community and a small number of gamers, Sony has been working on a rival device for its next-gen console, and it is on track to be revealed in 2014.

Multiple sources have indicated to Eurogamer that Sony’s VR headset will work similarly to Oculus’. Internally, the device has been demonstrated with Evolution Studios’ PS4 racer DriveClub, with players able to look around the cockpit of a car.

Eurogamer understands Sony’s VR headset was set to appear in some form at German show Gamescom last week, but was pulled. We now expect it to be unveiled next year.

Why was Gaikai not talked about at Gamescom?

“Yeah sure and I’ll tell you why is wasn’t touched upon last night. So the plan is to begin with North America next year and the plan is to provide a streaming service that will allow for PS3 content initially to be streamed to firstly PS4 then PS Vita and then PS3.

Ryan went on to say “that will happen in 2014 in North America initially” before highlighting the poor broadband speeds in Europe, which he says is “on the roadmap” for Gaikai, though they don’t quite have a timeline for it yet. Since Gamescom is for primarily the European audience, that’s why it wasn’t mentioned during the conference.

He followed up that “there’s just a few bumps along the road that need to be ironed out” in regards to the European launch and that while it’ll be “early-ish” 2014 for the US, he has “nothing to say yet” on a date for Europe.”

Another detail that Sony mentioned today was the launch of Player Studio.  Player Studio is Sony’s Marketplace where users can upload their art and content and then sell it to other users. Sony splits the revenue 40% with the user. So far, the marketplace has been announced for Everquest 1, Everquest 2, Freerealm, and Planetside 2.  Planetside 2 will be a free-to-play launch title for the PS4 later this year.  It hasn’t been announced yet that the Player Studio will be available to PS4 users, but there is no reason to doubt that it would happen.  If this program is successful, it is almost guaranteed that this would expand to other titles as well.

This could open up an entirely new dimension in console games that hasn’t been seen before.

PlayStation 4 reserves 3.5GB of its 8GB GDDR5 memory for the operating system, leaving 4.5GB of space for game code, according to current PlayStation 4 documentation shown to Digital Foundry by a well-placed development source. However, further sources suggest that an additional 1GB of “flexible memory” may be reclaimed from the OS reservation, based on availability.

Sony’s internal docs say that 4.5GB is the baseline amount of guaranteed memory available for game-makers  and most likely what the lion’s share of launch titles will be using. ~ Digital Foundry

For some context, the Xbox One devotes a comparable 3GB of its 8GB of RAM to the system software, according to reports, and the Wii U uses a full half of its 2GB of RAM for the OS. On PCs, Windows 8 needs 1GB of RAM ~ Arstechnica
