Trade-in or Sell?

Most of us realize that trading in used games normally means you are going to get less money in return.  But the added benefit of  trading is the convenience a customer has by simply walking into the store with games, and walking out of the stores with cash.  But how much are you paying or willing to pay for that added convenience?

Selling used games may net you more money, but is it worth the added work you have to put in to list, package, and ship your items?

This commentary isn’t meant to persuade you of either choice.  As an individual, it is your responsibility to make the decision that best suits your lifestyle and needs. This experiment simply provides a real look at the raw numbers between the choices.  I first took my games to a Gamestop to get the Gamestop Trade-In Values, and then I listed all of the games on Ebay and started the auction price at $0.99 for each game. Below are the results.

I charged $4 shipping which gave me an additional $104.  From this amount, I paid my ebay fees ($23.82) / Packaging materials ($15.39) / Postage ($62.83) – which left me $1.96.

So in total, I walked away with $194.15 by selling my games on ebay.  Which means I made $82.95 extra by selling instead of trading in.

Keep in mind that this is only one experiment, and you have many options when it comes to trading or selling games.  I used Gamestop and Ebay.  But there are a number of different companies and websites that you can go through when offloading games.  I probably could have made more money for instance by selling on Craigslist and would have skipped shipping costs.  Either way, i’m happy to have some extra cash that I can apply towards the next Xbox One or PS4.

The biggest lesson I think I learned from this experiment, is that I won’t be buying pre-owned games in store anymore.  As noted on the table, if you had purchased these games in store, you would have spent $415 (Pre-tax).  The people who purchased the games online received a much better deal. *NOTE* I do want to add that Gamestop does offer deals occasionally where you can get more for the games you trade-in. However, they were not running any extra deals that would aid me in getting more money for a next-gen system the day I went in the store.  If you have a PowerUp Rewards card, you can get an extra 10% on values.  But the reward card costs $14.99, so I wouldn’t have saved any extra money.  The amount saved would not have even covered the cost of the card.

A federal lawsuit filed against the video-game vendor GameStop Corp. alleges three South Jersey stores sold used games that sometimes cost more than buying new.

This week, a federal judge in Camden decided the three customers have a right to sue the company, which they accuse of concealing that the cost of used games did not include downloads provided with new games. Instead, the suit alleges, it cost an additional $10 to $15 to purchase downloads, which combined with the price of the used game, often cost more than it would have cost to purchase it new. In other cases, it did not equal the savings the company advertised.

The suits allege GameStop, with more than 4,000 stores, including 156 in New Jersey, makes more than $2 billion a year selling used video games that they purchase for a fraction of the cost paid for a new game. It resells the games with more than a 50 percent profit margin, the lawsuits allege. “GameStop aggressively markets the purchase of used copies of games as a way for consumers to save money compared to the purchase of a new copy of the same game,” according to the lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Camden. ~Source: Philly News

Gamers are speaking with their wallets following E3 2013, a show that was dominated by Sony PlayStation 4 in the next gen battle. Amazon has already sold out of the $400 PlayStation 4 launch edition of the next gen console, which will be available on day one of Sony’s launch. Sony is still selling PS4 as a $400 Standard Edition, but is not guaranteeing when gamers will receive that version this fall.

PS4 is also being bundled as a $500 bundle with two different versions, one including Electronic Arts’ Battlefield 4 and PS Plus and one including Guerilla Games’ Killzone Shadow Fall and PS Plus. There are also two other bundles retailing for $460, one including Sony’s Knack and the other including Ubisoft’s Watch Dog.

The Xbox One Day One Edition is still available for $500. Amazon is not currently selling any Xbox One bundles. Microsoft MSFT -0.91%’s Forza Motorsport 5 is the only Xbox One game in the Top 20 bestselling games list on the site. Sony has three PS4 games (Watch Dogs, Battlefield 4 and Killzone Shadow Fall) in the Top 20. Gamers are also buying the Dualshock 4 PS4 controller and the PlayStation 4 Camera. Three of the PS4 bundles (all but the Knack bundle) are in the Top 20 in Amazon sales.

While the PS4 Standard Edition is listed number one and Xbox One Day One Edition is listed number two on Amazon, sources have told me that PS4 is outselling Xbox One by two to one. I’ve emailed Amazon to confirm these numbers, but have not heard back. Baird video game analyst Colin Sebastian confirmed that PS4 is outselling Xbox One on both Amazon and GameStop, but has not revealed any specific numbers.

While Microsoft claims that they will reveal everything in further detail later on, we do know a little bit more about how the game system will work. Both Xbox and Gamestop are also reporting that players will still be able to trade and sell their games online or at stores.

The gaming industry has come under a lot of fire for the effect of violent games on kids lately, but a Federal Trade Commission secret shopper report released today found minors have a harder time buying an M-rated game than they do a ticket or DVD for an R-rated movie, or music with explicit lyrics.
